Housing: More than half of wages go towards rent

One in seven people in Germany spends more than half of their net wages on rent, according to a survey. The differences across Germany are significant.
According to a survey, 15 percent of people in Germany spend more than half of their net salary on rent each month. Three percent of respondents even pay more than 70 percent on rent. This was the result of a representative survey conducted by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the news agency dpa. More than 4,000 people took part, almost 2,400 of whom were tenants. The other end of the scale was also surveyed: Only eight percent of people spend less than 20 percent of their net salary on rent. Almost half of those surveyed pay between 20 and 39 percent on rent. A further 17 percent spend between 40 and 49 percent of their monthly net salary on rent.
