It will not be easy for the new coach to overtake Michał Probierz
Only in a slightly more titled version, although this phrase should be placed in quotation marks, unless the category of "trophies" includes the bronze medal in the Slovenian league and promotion from Ligue 2, and then staying in the French elite. These are achievements worthy of note, although they do not really cover those achieved in our reality years ago by the aforementioned Michał Probierz at the helm of Cracovia (as a reminder - 4th place in the Ekstraklasa, the Polish Cup and Super Cup), if of course we happily assume that 0:0 with Legia Warsaw is worth as much as 1:1 with Paris Saint-Germain.
From the generalities that Elsner formulated during his first days in Krakow, one can conclude that he will gladly undertake the task of qualifying the team for European cups. Please note that – contrary to the first impression – this is not a lofty goal at all, because in Kałuża no one talks about the title or even a modest medal of the Polish Championship. And since in the upcoming season, thanks to the points collected in recent years by several leading Ekstraklasa teams and the pride of the First League – Wisła Krakow, a European prize awaits a team from outside the podium (in favorable circumstances even from fifth position), then going even one rung lower, to Kroczek's debut achievement, would be an unpleasant defeat for the Slovenian.
It was not for this reason that president Mateusz Dróżdż, aware of the impending sale of the club by Comarch's owner, the CVC Capital Partners fund, flew to France to rest on the foundations laid over the last year and a half. And it was not for this reason that – following the example of the new manager of Widzew, where he had the pleasure of working not so long ago – he began to mutter about expanding the tiny stadium. The thing is that Kraków is not Łódź, where conservators jealously guarding monuments and architects beautifying landscapes rule, so any attempts to cover the Royal Castle with high stands are doomed to failure from the start.
Nothing and no one will ever outshine Wawel, even if players from the Champions League descend on its walls. All that remains is to be satisfied with more modest goals in the form of qualifying for the Conference League, which would be quite an event for Pasy anyway. We are talking about a team that, even in the times of the greatest prosperity of the 21st century, did not win a single match in Europe. And today this is the reference point for superpower plans, which of course Cracovia fully deserves.
CVC Capital Partners is a private equity firm managing assets worth nearly EUR 200 billion, which is the richest owner of all those who own Polish clubs, but that does not mean that Pasy are also the richest. Comarch provides stability and - in view of the record loss for last year exceeding PLN 29 million - transfers further rescue millions to the club's account, but if the American Robert Platek, delighted with the former seat of kings, or another potential contractor does not submit a purchase offer in the coming months, the austerity option may come into effect in the management of Cracovia. And then Luka Elsner will see that the task of qualifying for European cups is a very ambitious goal indeed.
