Inter Milan are surprised by Monterrey and draw in the World Cup

ROME, 18 JUN (ANSA) – Inter Milan disappointed in their Club World Cup debut on Tuesday night (17) and were held to a 1-1 draw by Monterrey in the first round of the competition.
Faced with 30ºC heat at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and an inspired Sergio Ramos, the Italian team suffered in Los Angeles, in the match refereed by Brazilian Wilton Pereira Sampaio, despite having put pressure on the opponent in the attacking field.
Monterrey, however, opened the scoring with their first opportunity, in the 25th minute: after a corner kick, the former Real Madrid defender jumped to head the ball into the back of the net.
Behind on the scoreboard, Inter Milan continued to press and create opportunities, until Argentine Lautaro Martínez snatched an equalizer in the 42nd minute, and sealed the result after a rehearsed play.
In the final stage, the team led by Christian Chivu remained on the attack, but were unable to change the score. Martínez managed to score again, but was offside. In total, the Italians recorded eight offsides throughout the match.
The result leaves the two teams tied on one point in Group E, which is led by River Plate, who defeated Urawa Reds. In the next round, on June 21, the Nerazzurri will face the Japanese, while Monterrey will face the Argentines. (ANSA)
